Two people reportedly shot outside arena hosting high school graduation

Police are responding to the scene where two people were reportedly outside a multi-purpose arena in Southeastern Missouri Sunday afternoon.

According to Southeast Missouri State University, which owns and operates the Show Me Center, where Cape Central High School was hosting its graduation ceremony, two people were shot and at least one of them was taken to the hospital.

In a message posted to social media, Cape Central High School Superintendent Dr. Howard Benyon said that no students, families or faculty related to the secondary school were injured and the arena's staff worked diligently to help get everyone out of the building safely. The graduation ceremony will be rescheduled to a later day.

"Please be patient with us as we work through this situation," Benyon wrote. "We want to plan an event that celebrates our graduates the way they deserve, but our priority at this time is working police to aid their investigation of this situation.

This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
