Syracuse arrests convicted killer staying in campus encampment following lawmaker outrage

The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety on Friday arrested Eural Warren, a convicted killer who had been present at the school’s Gaza solidarity encampment.

An encampment of over 70 tents has taken over Syracuse’s Quad in protest of its refusal to condemn Israel in its war with Hamas terrorists. Individuals occupying the encampment have allegedly been witnessed “following Jewish students that walk past the tent encampment in an attempt to harass them.”

The National Desk reported Thursday that Warren, who was convicted of manslaughter in New York in 1996, has remained on campus despite student concerns reported to administration. Warren is not affiliated with Syracuse University, yet students at the school have repeatedly spotted him at the encampment since April 29.

An image obtained by TND Friday depicts Warren in handcuffs in front of a DPS squad car. The image, which was posted by a Syracuse University pro-Palestine group, includes a caption that claims Warren was “doxed by Zionists.”

DPS racism on display,” the caption reads.

When reached for comment Friday, a university spokesperson confirmed Warren has been arrested and removed from school property.

“On Wednesday, we informed the student protesters that non-affiliates of the University are not permitted on our campus as part of their protest,” it reads. “We had not seen this individual on our campus until this afternoon. Once spotted, he was promptly arrested and removed from campus.”

A spokesperson for DPS declined comment when reached by TND. Warren did not respond to a request for comment from TND Friday via email.

A male Syracuse student, who asked to remain anonymous, told TND the move came far too late.

That’s one step toward something,” he said. “This is a very late reaction by the university. It takes a few news articles to have a reaction to it, to end up doing something.”

“It’s upsetting it took this long,” he added.

The news of Warren's presence on campus drew outrage from several federal lawmakers. Before Warren's arrest, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., told TND university leadership put students in danger by not acting sooner.

Syracuse University’s leadership is sacrificing the safety and security of its student body to the pro-Hamas mob allowing illegal antisemitic encampments including a convicted felon guilty of a brutal murder,” Rep. Stefanik said. “Despite students' concerns, Syracuse University unfortunately decided that pandering to self-proclaimed terrorists is more important than Syracuse students. This is unacceptable, Syracuse University President Kent Syverud must protect campus immediately.”

Also reacting to TND’s coverage on Thursday was Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo.

“Now we’ve got convicted killers on the loose in these encampments,” Sen. Hawley said Thursday. “Jail the lawbreakers. Expel the students. Deport the illegals. Send in the Guard.”

Students at the school said Warren’s presence represented a major hazard in daily life.

His past, I found that out and I was fearful for myself and other students, what he could have done to us,” an anonymous student told TND. “We had our walk for Israel and he was there. God forbid he could have came at us and done something.”

“They let a convicted murderer stay on campus,” he added. “That is not ok.”

“For me personally, it’s scary,” another anonymous student said. “The school keeps saying they want to keep us safe. The only time they listen to us is the time we do the research and we find someone who is a convicted killer. If they care so much about keeping us safe why aren’t they doing research?”

“It’s unacceptable,” the student added.
