Portland State University faces $750K in repairs after protest occupation of library

It could cost between $750,000 and $875,000 to repair Portland State University's publicly-funded Millar Library after it was heavily damaged and vandalized during a protest occupation earlier this month.

Millar Library was occupied by pro-Palestine protesters who staged an occupation of the building in late April through early May.

Portland Police previously gave KATU a look at the extensive damage in the library, which included paint-covered floors, piles of trash, wooden pallets, and tents scattered all over the building.

Over-turned furniture that was used as barricades to slow down officers blocked some walkways and a stairwell. Graffiti was scrawled all over the walls, windows, and books.

The library, which is used as an essential meeting place and resource center for students, will likely be closed until the fall for repairs and cleanup. The initial cleanup of graffiti began two weeks ago.

On Tuesday a PSU Media Relations Manager announced the university's estimate of repair costs to Millar Library.

"The rough estimate is $750,000. That’s for repairing damages and restoring the library. That could increase or decrease by about $125,000," the representative stated.

The university noted that the figure does not include the cost of replacing and repairing damaged technology or furniture that will need to be replaced/repaired. Additionally, PSU has insurance and is seeking a claim to offset some of the costs of the repairs.
