Plans move forward to build KFC in Johnstown suburb

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Plans to demolish Hometown Bar & Grill on Scalp Ave. and bring a Kentucky Fried Chicken back to the township are moving forward, according to documents filed with the Zoning and Hearing Board.

Ampex Brands filed what’s called a variance application. It’s essentially a request for an exception from township zoning rules.

The company wants to build the KFC in the same location as Hometown, but one of the walls is too close to a side street.

Hometown had a similar exception; in fact, the bar’s wall was even closer to the side street than the planned wall for the KFC.

Township officials told 6 News on Wednesday that they expect representatives from Ampex to attend a Planning Commission sometime in the next two months.

In February, Dave Murgas, who has owned Hometown for more than 11 years, said the KFC could open by October, and that the deal could close by the end of the summer.

“I’d like to thank the community, our loyal patrons, the management at Hometown and all our employees for great memories and wish them well,” Murgas told 6 News last month.
