Despite rain, large wildfire in North Carolina grows, threatening structures

CHEROKEE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — The largest wildfire in western North Carolina is getting bigger. The Collett Ridge Fire is burning in Cherokee County near Andrews and, despite light rainfall, is threatening several structures. It now encompasses more than 5,000 acres and is still only 5% contained. “At this time, the Collett Ridge Fire is currently at 5,116 acres,” U.S. Forest Service spokesperson Adrianne Rubiaco said. She said 178 firefighters are on the scene near Andrews, responding from near and far, even from California, to put the fire out. [Read More]

Penn State files lawsuit against longtime broadcast partner

University Park, PA (WJAC) — Penn State is filing a federal lawsuit against one of its longtime broadcast partners. Learfield Communications has been a multimedia partner for various Penn State athletic teams for more than 20 years. But with the university apparently lining up a contract with another company, Learfield is raising questions on the bidding process and other information. Teen finds child porn glued to playground slide

PUYALLUP, Wash. (KOMO) - A teenager says someone glued child pornography to the inside of a playground's slide in Puyallup, Washington, and police are trying to find out who would do such a thing. A 16-year-old made the disturbing discovery at Bradley Lake Park Friday afternoon. Police said it was a collage of child porn on a piece of paper glued to the inside of the slide. “I got petrified after seeing it because knowing that I have a 4-year-old niece and we were here playing with her,” said Brandon, who didn’t want to share his last name. Kids accused of assaulting, shooting homeless man near Washington transit center

KENT, Wash. (KOMO) — Police in Kent, Washington are investigating an overnight shooting near a busy transit center that sent a man to the hospital. A 32-year-old man, identified by officers as transient, called 911 after he said he was shot in the lower back and assaulted by at least four juveniles when leaving Kent Station just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday. One person dead following shooting at Geisinger Medical Center

An employee of Geisinger Medical Center is dead following a shooting last evening in the medical center parking lot, according to a press release by the Montour County Coroner's office. According to the release, Vikki Wetzel, 49, of Berwick, PA was returning to her car after her shift when she was shot. The press release states that the shooting occurred at 5:04 p.m. according to audio captured by a private residence's security system. [Read More]

Pirates trade veteran catcher Austin Hedges to the Rangers

Pittsburgh (WJAC) — With less than an hour to go before the 2023 MLB trade deadline, multiple reports indicate that the Pittsburgh Pirates are trading veteran catcher Austin Hedges to the Texas Rangers. Hedges signed a one-year deal with the Pirates in the offseason. He has played in 65 games this year for Pittsburgh, recording 29 hits, one homerun and 14 RBIs, along with a batting average of .180. Plans move forward to build KFC in Johnstown suburb

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Plans to demolish Hometown Bar & Grill on Scalp Ave. and bring a Kentucky Fried Chicken back to the township are moving forward, according to documents filed with the Zoning and Hearing Board. Ampex Brands filed what’s called a variance application. It’s essentially a request for an exception from township zoning rules.
