JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A new business has opened up in Cambria County and has taken downtown Johnstown by storm.
Taco Chellz in downtown Johnstown just opened their doors to customers. The response from people in the community seems to be positive since they are selling out of food almost every day.
Taco Chellz is “nacho” average Mexican restaurant. After selling tacos at fundraisers and the farmers market, owner Michelle Haselrig decided it was time to open a restaurant of her own, but later in the year than she expected.
“Our first grand opening was supposed to be March 13, but because of the pandemic. So I rolled the dice, filled out applications, got the help to keep my employees and we worked so hard to get this up in a month and a half and then we opened June 8th, said Taco Chellz owner, Michelle Haselrig.
The take-out restaurant is located off of Main street in downtown Johnstown, a place where new businesses are starting to flourish.
“Downtown Johnstown is beautiful. And it is up and coming. And I’m telling you we are going to be like a little mini Pittsburgh. It’s great to have a business here you have the support of the town which I love,” said Haselrig.
Taco ‘bout showing support: the new restaurant has become so popular they can’t quite keep up with customers cravings.
“It’s so overwhelming but in a good way. I am so humbled and very thankful that every day last week we sold out. Not because of the supplies but just the demand. I started with 80 pounds of ground beef and now we are up to 150 pounds of ground beef, more people keep coming and they love it,” said Haselrig.
The “home of the giant killer taco” is named after Haselrig’s husband and football star, Carlton Haselrig. She hopes one day, the restaurant can be passed on to the next generation in her family.
“Family means everything to me. It just feels special so you can pass it along so our roots can stay here in Johnstown,” said Haselrig. “When I’m long gone by granddaughter, my grandson, my grandchildren, their children, I hope they keep this going for years and years to come,” she added.
